Rod Spence’s career in public relations and marketing was preceded by a decade in news media where he achieved outstanding success from an early age.
At 24 he was appointed editor of two regional newspapers in Northern NSW owned by a major Australian media group. After one year he was promoted to managing editor. To counter major free-newspaper opposition he amalgamated the papers, won back revenue
and his newspaper won the State’s major provincial media award.
Other early Journalistic experience included general news reporting and sub-editing with Brisbane Metropolitan newspapers as well as reporting for Australian Associated Press and for the ABC as a regional correspondent.
Spence’s last media experience was with Australia’s leading regional newspaper The Gold Coast Bulletin, where he held positions as news editor and chief of staff over a period of five years.
During his time in this position the Gold Coast Bulletin won three national media awards.
Spence’s material has been used many thousands of times in very diverse media around the nation, has appeared on the front pages of the Australian Financial Review and The Australian, has been featured on national television and radio on many occasions.
He has exceptional media contacts and is widely respected by both journalists and peers.
Spence has been a key advisor to many major Gold Coast, Queensland, national and international companies, senior politicians and industry leaders.
This background gave Spence a great depth of media, communication and business skills on which to base his subsequent public relations and marketing career.
In 1983, Spence identified demand for a public relations and marketing consultancy on the Gold Coast, before he co-founded Promedia Pty Ltd which became one of the
most successful companies of its kind in Queensland.
Promedia was restructured in 2004 with Spence divesting his interests in this company to focus on his key areas of interest, professional services public relations and marketing and project marketing support, providing total marketing services via The Focal Point Group.
